How to Make Air Fryer French Fries

Start by peeling and washing 3-4 medium Russet potatoes. Slice them into strips about ½ inch in thickness.

Potato slices cut and rinsed in a clear glass bowl.

Place the potato slices in a medium bowl, filled with very cold water, (you can even add a couple of ice cubes if necessary), and let them soak for at least 30-60 minutes. The water will turn white from the excess starch.

Potato slices cut into fries, being soaked in a clear glass bowl filled with cold water.

After they are done soaking, drain the water and then pat them dry with paper towels. Lightly coat the potato slices with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.

Place the fries in the air fryer basket, in a single layer, without overcrowding. If they can’t fit in the basket, work in batches so the air flow can crisp them up properly.

Air fry at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for about 14 minutes, tossing halfway through. Adjust the cooking time based on your preferred level of crispiness. Then repeat with the remaining batch.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 4 medium Russet Potatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Peel and wash each potato. Slice them into strips, about 1/2 inch in thickness.
  • In a medium bowl, soak the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30-60 minutes.
  • After they have soaked, drain the water from the bowl. Add the olive oil to the fries, tossing them until they have been lightly coated with oil.
  • Place half of the fries in the air fryer basket, without having them touch or overlap.
  • Air fry at 380 degrees F for about 14 minutes, tossing halfway through cooking. You can add an additional minute or two, depending on your preferred crispness.

Notes

Soak the potatoes in cold water to remove the starch. It will turn the water white. This is what helps them be crispy so don’t skip this step.
Try to make the fries similar in size and thickness. This is SO important because if you have skinny fries cooking with thick fries, the skinny fries will cook faster and can burn.

Out of all the recipes saying
to soak cut fries for an hour in water, not one has stated to pat dry potatoes prior to spritzing with oil.
I feel this is an important step and may cause for failure of the fries.
Thank you for clarifying this important step.

Do I dry potatoes b4 adding oil?

    1. Rebecca says:

Hi Lindy. I pat them dry and then add the olive oil. Hope that helps.

  4. Bonnie says:

I did everything it called for. Soaked in cold water for 30 minutes, coated in olive oil and salted . They came out limp and soft

    1. Jen West says:

Hi Bonnie! What type of air fryer do you use? All air fryers cook a bit differently. Your brand of air fryer may not cook as powerful as our brand we use. Our brand we use cooks at 1700 watts. If you’re using a smaller air fryer that cooks at let’s say 1000 watts, or 1400 watts, you will definitely need to add additional time to this recipe. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope that helps! (That’s usually the issue!)

  5. Ricky says:

    Step 4, why half?

    1. Rebecca says:

I only air fry half at a time so you don’t overcrowd the basket and they cook more evenly.
