WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

You will love this juicy chicken that is made with a handful of common ingredients. It will make a delicious dinner for all chicken lovers that takes just minutes to prepare and cook. Besides the traditional Air Fryer Chicken Breast, or Air Fryer Chicken Wings, this recipe is one you will get asked to make, again and again.

Homemade anything is always great, and because this recipe has almost no prep time, it is a welcome dish for a workday lunch, dinner or picnic at the park or lake.

Ingredients:

Ingredients needed to make shake and bake chicken on a white marble table
  • boneless skinless chicken breasts, about 6-8 ounces each
  • mayonnaise- or olive oil, milk, or water
  • shake and bake packet- or use homemade seasonings

Ingredients to make homemade shake and bake breading mix:

  • Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
  • salt
  • paprika
  • garlic powder
  • ground black pepper

Optional spices: For an extra kick of flavor, use your favorite seasoning, chili powder, celery salt or onion powder to your spice mix.

Optional dipping sauce: Make a cayenne ranch sauce, buffalo wing sauce or an Asian-style sauce. They will all add an extra boost of flavor to every chicken bite.

How to make Shake N' Bake Chicken in Air Fryer:

  1. Place chicken on cutting board or baking tray and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside. Pour shake and bake packet or homemade coating into a large Ziploc storage bag.

  2. Next lightly coat both sides of boneless chicken breasts with mayonnaise, so the coating will adhere to the chicken.Chicken breast on a white plate being coated with mayonnaise

  3. Place chicken into bag with seasonings. Seal or fold over top of bag and shake the chicken in coating mixture until each chicken piece is completely covered without any dry spots showing.Plastic bag with chicken and seasonings shaken to coat chicken

  4. Prepare the air fryer basket by lightly spraying it with a nonstick cooking spray, line with air fryer parchment paper or use a perforated silicone mat.

  5. Place each piece of chicken into the basket in a single layer and air fryer at 380 degrees F for 15-18 minutes, depending on the thickness.Golden crispy coated chicken in the air fryer basket before being cooked

  6. Use a meat thermometer to make sure chicken is cooked through. Internal temperature for a chicken breast should be 165 degrees F. Thicker chicken breasts will require additional cooking time.Crispy chicken coated with seasonings in the air fryer basket after being cooked

  7. Let chicken rest for a few minutes prior to serving.

I make this dish in my Cosori 5.8 qt. air fryer. Depending on your air fryer size and wattage cook time may need to be adjusted 1-2 minutes.

FAQ's

Can I use chicken tenders, chicken drumsticks, chicken thighs or chicken wings?

All of these types of chicken will be scrumptious with homemade coating or from a packet. It all depends on your chicken of choice. These different cuts of chicken are all smaller than a chicken breast so cooking times will vary.

How do I store leftovers?

Chicken leftovers can be stored in your freezer in an airtight container or air-tight gallon freezer bag for up to 3 months. If refrigerating place in a regular storage bag or tightly sealed container for 3-4 days. Remember to allow food to completely cool prior to storing.

What can I serve with this chicken dish?

There are a number of side dishes that will make this chicken dish a complete meal. Asparagus, cauliflower, baked potatoes, or even French Fries, are all easy air fryer side dishes to serve with chicken.

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts about 6 ounces each
  • ⅓ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 shake and bake seasoning packet

Homemade Shake and Bake Seasonings

  • 1 cup Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Place chicken on cutting board or baking tray and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside.
  • Pour shake and bake packet or homemade coating into a brown paper bag or large storage bag.
  • Next lightly coat both sides of boneless chicken breasts with water, milk or oil so the coating will adhere to the chicken.
  • Place chicken into bag with seasonings. Seal or fold over top of bag and shake the chicken in coating mixture until each chicken piece is completely covered without any dry spots showing.
  • Prepare the air fryer basket by lightly spraying it with a nonstick cooking spray, line with air fryer parchment paper or use a perforated silicone mat. Place each piece of chicken into the basket in a single layer and air fryer at 380 degrees F for 12-14 minutes, depending on the thickness.
  • Use a meat thermometer to make sure chicken is cooked through. Internal temperature for a chicken breast should be 165 degrees F. Thicker chicken breasts will require additional cooking time. Let chicken rest for a few minutes prior to serving.

Notes

Substitute: Instead of water, milk or oil you can use an egg wash (lightly beaten egg) to brush chicken breasts which allows coating to also adhere.
Breadcrumbs method for dredging: For super crispy chicken pour all-purpose flour or coconut flour into a shallow bowl, next beat eggs in second bowl and last bread crumb mixture in third bowl. Dip each chicken piece in flour, egg and then breadcrumbs.
