Air Fryer baked apples are a quick and easy fall dessert that you’ll find yourself making over and over again.

Sweet apples get cored and filled with a mix of nuts, oats and some brown sugar and air fried to tender perfection. Craving for something more indulgent? Try my Air Fryer bloomin’ apples, which are an elevated version of these baked apples.

I love putting fresh apples to use, especially during fall. So naturally, I’ve tried my hands at quite a few recipes including the classic Air Fryer apple pie, some nice Air Fryer apple turnovers, and even some healthy and crunchy Air Fryer apple chips.

This time, I wanted to try my hands at a simple dessert that I could whip up using my Air Fryer- something that was fancy enough to serve when I’m entertaining, but one that still didn’t take too much effort. And these air fried baked apples ticked all those boxes!

Recipe Ingredients

Apples and other ingredients needed to bake apples in the air fryer.
  • Apples: It’s best to pick sweeter apples like Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious or Fuji apples.
  • Oats: I like to use Quacker’s quick or old fashioned oats.
  • Brown sugar: For that sweetness and a touch of caramel-like flavor.
  • Ground cinnamon: For that warmth. You can also use nutmeg or some of my homemade pumpkin pie spice.
  • Raisins + walnuts: For a bit of texture.
  • Butter: Unsalted butter is best.
  • Toppings: This one’s optional, but you can also add some dried cranberries or Air Fryer sugared pecans.

See recipe card for quantities.

Variations

  • If you don’t want to add the oatmeal filling, simply core and chop the apples in half, wedges or bite-size pieces. Then, simply sprinkle some cinnamon sugar over them and air fry until the apples are warm and soft.
  • This recipe using raisins, but you can also add dried blueberries or cranberries for a different flavor.
  • For a bit of extra flavor, use Air Fryer candied walnuts instead of regular walnuts.

Serving Ideas & Suggestions

These Air Fryer baked apples can be enjoyed an indulgent dessert on their own, or topped with a small scoop of ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. I like to top them with some roughly chopped Air Fryer pumpkin spice pecans and a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.

If I’m serving these for breakfast, I like to team them up with other classics like Air Fryer banana bread, Air Fryer breakfast potatoes, some Air Fryer French toast bites or just a nice Air Fryer breakfast bowl.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • Be careful not to remove too much of the apple cavity. Make a small hollow center to fill with the oat mixture, about ¾ of inch wide.
  • Make sure you remove enough of the center without going too far. You want to have enough room to fill them, but not so far down that it won’t hold it’s shape.
  • Got some more apples to use? Whip up some Air Fryer apples to serve as a topping over your breakfast pancakes, or team them up with some crescent roll dough to make Air Fryer apple hand pies.
  • To replicate the original oven-baked apples texture, you can add some water to the bottom of the Air Fryer basket- below the tray. This will help create steam which will give the apples the texture you’re looking for.
  • If you’re worried about the apples getting too mushy, you can use Granny Smith or Pink Lady apples for a firmer bite- I used them for my Air Fryer puff pastry apple rings.

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples
  • 2 tablespoons oats
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 2 tablespoons walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the oats, raisins, brown sugar, walnuts, and cinnamon. Stir in the melted butter until the ingredients are combined. Set the bowl aside to prepare the apples.
  • Cut the tops of the apple off along with the stem. Then, cut a small part of the bottom of the apple as well, so it stands up without shifting or rolling.
  • Use an apple corer, melon baller or paring knife to scoop out the apple core and remove all seeds.  Spoon the mixture into the cored apples until they are filled. Place the filled apples into the air fryer basket.
  • Air fry apples at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes until the apples reach your desired softness. Let apples cool just enough to remove from basket, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Don’t remove to much of the apple cavity, just make a small hollow center to fill with the oat mixture, about 3/4 of inch wide.
  • Be careful to not go all the way to the bottom of the apple or the crumble filling may fall through the bottom of apple while air frying.
  • When you select apples for this recipe, I use medium size apples. Depending on size of apples, you may need to adjust cook time. The larger apples work best to add filling.

I had to cook my apples for about 17 minutes before they were done. After 12 minutes, the tops of the apples were getting too brown, so I covered them with foil. So good!

We loved this easy and tasty recipe. I made it gluten free with what I had on hand. I substituted almonds for the nuts, dried cranberries and a couple of dried apricots for the raisins, and dropped the oats altogether since I didn’t have any guaranteed gluten free. I added a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice and mixed the ingredients in the food processor until I liked the consistency. I’ll make it again!

using Truvia brown sugar blend and chopped dates and a little almond flour to swap for oats I transformed this recipe to a very low sugar by default as I didn’t have the exact ingredients. a dollop of thick greek sf plain yogurt. So good and satisfied my craving for BAKED APPLES. Made my Sunday special.
