FAQ’s

What other tools can be used to make these pies?

A circle biscuit cutter works great. Various size of cookie cutter to create different shapes and designs is always fun or simply use the outer edge of a drinking glass or mason jar.

Can apple hand pies be stored?

You can store remaining pies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat the pies, place them in the air fryer and heat them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 minutes, or until heated through. Pies can be frozen for up to 2 months.

How to serve apple hand pies?

Hand held pies are easy because you don’t need plates. However, breaking it up to top scoops of vanilla ice cream will be super tasty, or place them on a nice platter with different toppings like chocolate sauce or whipped cream or candied nut mixture.

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Notes

Optional Fillings:  Some favorite fillings are blueberry, cherry, peach, strawberry or blackberry (adding a small squeeze of lemon juice will enhance the fruit flavor).
Optional Toppings: A touch of powdered sugar, caramel sauce, glaze of confectioners sugar,  brown sugar or granulated sugar with fall spices. For an extra depth of flavor sprinkle flaky sea salt or homemade nutmeg salt on top of pies when hot.
Substitutions for crustHomemade pie crusts are always great. Store bought puff pastry, pie dough circles, pizza dough or pastry rounds will also make good crusts for this dish. Any crusts from packaging will vary in cooking times.
Tips: Do not overfill pies with apple mixture or the filling will leak out into the basket. Cutting vents in top of pies will help the steam escape and create the perfect hand pie. To create an extra seal when closing the pastry, brush the edges with water.

What store bought pie crust do you use? I tried one that had a funky flavor and ruined my pies.

    1. Becky Abbott says:

I use Pillsbury pre-made pie crusts. I know different brands or generic crusts can taste differently. Hope that helps!

  2. Sandy says:

Can I use Pumpkin? I am thinking of cooking it in a small casserole dish then putting it in the round to air fry it. Might even try Lemon pie filling.

    1. Jen West says:

Yes! You can use any type of filling you desire. I’ve done many, and they always turn out amazing. ๐Ÿ™‚
