Air Fryer Sausage and Peppers is not only keto friendly, but a delicious and easy dinner everyone will enjoy. Made with sausage, red and green bell peppers, onions, and more.

Cooked Sausage and peppers in an air fryer basket.

I grew up eating sausage and peppers. It's a staple meal around here.

We make this dish at least once every six weeks and everyone loves it.

A sister dish to this is Air Fryer Italian Sausage. It's another of my favorites!

Living in the south means everything is made with peppers and onions, and this dish is one of my favorites.

You can serve it up and change it in so many different ways!

Ingredients Needed

  • 2 packages of sausage (Italian, Andoille, smoked, stuffed, whatever is your favorite)
  • red pepper
  • green pepper
  • onion
  • olive oil
  • garlic powder
  • chili pepper flakes
  • ground black pepper

Sausage and peppers is one of my favorite meals because it can be changed easily on a whim. If you want it hotter or milder, there are tons of ways to make this dish by interchanging a few ingredients.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Slice the sausage into bite sized pieces. Slice the bell peppers, and dice the onions.
  2. Add the sausage, bell peppers, and onions into a large sealable plastic bag. Add the olive oil, ground black pepper, and garlic powder to the bag. Seal the bag without removing any air and toss the ingredients to cover them evenly with oil and seasonings. Set aside.
  3. Preheat the Air Fryer to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Add the sausage and peppers to the Air Fryer basket and cook for 30 minutes, tossing the ingredients every 5 minutes.
  5. Remove from the Air Fryer and serve immediately.

Substitutions and FAQs

What type of sausage can I use with this recipe?

The most common sausage used in a sausage and peppers recipe is Italian sausage. You can also use smoked sausage, sweet sausage, andoille sausage, stuffed sausage, and more. There are over 200 types of sausage, so it's your preference.

What type of bell peppers can I use?

You can make this dish with several different colors of bell peppers. I love to use red and green, but you can add yellow, and orange and use as many as you like. If you don't like a color, just skip it and grab one you do prefer.

How can I make this recipe spicier?

While this is more on the milder end of sausage and pepper dishes, you can spice things up by adding in a few different things. Use hot Italian sausage and consider adding more chili pepper flakes for a little kick. If you want to make this dish milder, consider skipping the chili pepper flakes altogether.

How to store, keep, and freeze:

You can keep this fully cooked sausage and peppers recipe for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. You can also freeze this recipe for up to 3 months in an airtight container. To reheat, thaw in the fridge and reheat in the air fryer for 12-15 minutes on 290 degrees Fahrenheit, tossing every few minutes to ensure even cooking.

How do I serve sausage and peppers?

If you're looking to keep this recipe keto friendly, you can easily do so. Serve the sausage and peppers over a bed of zoodles or cauliflower rice. If you're not into Keto and are eating this with carbs, load the sausage and peppers into a hoagie bun or serve over white rice.

Perfect amount of time for the sausage, too much time for the vegetables. I will add the veggies halfway through, next time. Other than that, very good.

SO glad you liked them! It's one of our favorite meals. TIP on the vegetables: You can always add them at a later time if you aren't using a lot. We like to add a LOT of vegetables so they always take longer. Not to mention, this was done with a Cosori 5.8, and if you're using a different air fryer, it can cook differently. We suggest using all of the recipes as "guides" because you may need to add or take away a minute or two to make them perfect in your brand of air fryer. Thank you so much for trying it out and letting us know! 🙂

I know this a site for air friers. But since I don't have one yet. Can I make this in the oven or slow cooker or stove top. Thanks on advance. I know I'm missing out on having a air fryer. But hopefully soon.

Of course! I make this in the skillet on my stovetop often. Place a medium sized skillet over medium heat on the stovetop and add a Tablespoon of olive oil, onions, and peppers, and sauté for a few minutes or until the onions are translucent. Add the sliced sausage to the onions and peppers and continue cooking, tossing frequently, until the sausage is cooked and heated all the way through.

This is very simple and versatile recipe for any meal. Today I substituted breakfast sausage patties and made this recipe in the air fryer. When it was near done, I scrambled some eggs on the stove. I plated the scrambled eggs, added a layer of cheese and topped with the air fryer mix. Best breakfast ever...but could be served at anytime.

Going to try the recipe, it sounds great! I will make it more eco-friendly by simply tossing ingredients in a stainless mixing bowl and save tossing the single use zip lock bag in the landfill! Will report back!
