Fish and Chips in the Air Fryer
You will love this recipe because who doesn't love crispy foods and a dipping sauce. This is one of my father's favorite foods that he immensely enjoys, and he likes it even better when the method of cooking is air frying.
This is a great recipe for a busy weeknight meal, having friends over for a fish "air fry" party or a hearty lunch during the week. These are wonderful as a main dish, appetizers or a snack after a hectic day.
Ingredients:
- all-purpose flour
- smoked paprika
- garlic powder
- sea salt
- ground black pepper
- large egg
- panko breadcrumbs
- cod fillet cut into small strips
- olive oil spray
Optional Additional Flavors: Old Bay seasoning, Italian seasoning, onion powder, curry powder, a pinch of cayenne pepper or cumin.
How to Make Fish and Chips in the Air Fryer:
- First set up your dredging stations.
- In a small bowl mix the flour with paprika, garlic powder, sea salt and ground black pepper together.
- In a separate bowl whisk the egg and a spoonful of cold water to create an egg wash.
- Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.
- Lay the fish strips on a cutting board and pat dry with a paper towel.
- Dredge the fish in the flour mixture and shake off the excess flour, then dip in egg mixture and lastly into the breadcrumb mixture, pressing down lightly so the breadcrumbs adhere to the fish (shake off any excess batter).
- Place each fillet on a baking sheet until dredging all the fish is complete.
- Spray both sides of the seasoned fish fillets with cooking spray.
- Place the cod fish strips into the air fryer basket in a single layer, be sure not to overcrowd.
- Air fry at 400 degrees F for 10-12 minutes, flipping the fish halfway through the cooking process, until they are crispy and golden brown.
- Use a fork to check for desired doneness, it should flake easily (internal temperature should be 145 degrees F). Cooking times may need to be an additional couple of minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish.
- When cooking fish in batches, place first batch on a cooking rack so they remain crispy.
- Once the fish is done cooking, prepare the air fryer to make russet potato chips. Serve together hot on a tray or separate plates.
Optional Favorite Dipping Sauce: Tartar sauce, lemon wedges, sweet chili sauce, ketchup or lemon slices with malt vinegar.
Cooking Tips: Place a piece of parchment paper in air fryer basket this will ensure fish does not stick and make for easier clean up.
Substitutions: Use tapioca flour, almond flour, cassava flour, gluten-free flour and coconut flour in place of all-purpose flour.
I make this recipe in my Cosori 5.8 qt. air fryer. Depending on your air fryer, size and wattages, cook time may need to be adjusted 1-2 minutes.
FAQ's
What can I serve with these fish?
The two most common sides to serve with this fish are crispy french fries or potato chips. A few fun sides are crunchy zucchini chips, asparagus fries or sweet potato fries. Broccolini, smashed potatoes and cauliflower will taste amazing with this moist fish.
Can I store leftover fish?
Allow fish to completely cool prior to storing. Store in an airtight container or resealable storage bag in your refrigerator for up to 4 days. Wrap fish in plastic wrap and then place in an air-tight container in your freezer for up to 2 months.
Are there other fishes I can use?
If you cannot find cod to make this dish there are other types, you can use. White fishes that will be great substitutions for cod are halibut, red snapper, haddock, strips of swordfish or frozen fish fillets. When choosing a fish make sure it is a firm, denser fish because it will stay in one piece through dredging and cooking process.
Is this dish easy to prepare ahead of time?
Yes, it makes for easier meal prep because you can cut fish into strips and dry them, placing them on a covered cookie sheet in your refrigerator to pull out when it is time to cook. The flour mixed with seasonings and breadcrumb mixture can also be prepared ahead in bowls or plastic bags so all that needs to be done is crack and whisk an egg and you're ready to make this tasty meal.
