EXPERT TIPS

When making oatmeal it’s important you choose the right kind of oats for your oatmeal consistency preference. Old fashioned oats or quick oats, are the most common used oats because they give a smooth texture.

Normally, when making oatmeal the recipe will call for 2 parts liquid to 1 part oats. For this recipe, I used 1 to 1 ratio, but you can adjust to your preference. Add more liquid if you like your oatmeal thinner and more runny.

Brown sugar and honey add a great sweet flavor without overpowering your breakfast. If you want your oatmeal sweeter, add honey or granulated sugar to your liking.

Oatmeal is best when served warm so eat as soon as you are done air frying.

WHAT OATS TO USE FOR THIS RECIPE

For air fryer oatmeal, try using various types of oats, but the choice is your preference and desired texture. When I make air fryer oatmeal, the old-fashioned and quick-cooking oats are what we use for best results.

Old fashioned and quick-cooking oats are our preferred oats. They make a creamy and smooth oatmeal because they have been steamed and rolled. Rolled oats seems to make a smoother oatmeal.

Instant oats are pre-cooked before they are dried so they are fast and easy to prepare. They are soft , but I feel like they can me a little mushy. They still make a great oatmeal!

Steel-cut oats are cut instead of being rolled and flattened. They have a chewier texture and can take longer to cook.

VARIATIONS

It is so easy to change the flavor of this oatmeal recipe. Here are just a few suggestions:

Sweet: Add in your favorite toppings of fresh fruit or dried fruits like berries, strawberries, raisins, apple slices, coconut flakes, or even bananas. Frozen fruits like frozen blueberries, raspberries, or frozen cherries are some of our favorite fruits to add to oatmeal.

To enhance the sweetness, add your favorite sweetener to the oatmeal mixture, like a drizzle honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, or just add extra in extra brown sugar.

Savory and Nutty: I love sprinkling in chia seeds, flaxseeds, or chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans, into the oatmeal. The nuts give extra protein while adding a little crunch! You can sprinkle in your favorite spices too.

We also use cinnamon, but nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice, a pinch of salt, or even a pinch of cardamom to boost the flavor of our oatmeal.

For a bigger nut flavor, pour in a spoonful of a nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter.

Chocolate: If you need to satisfy a little sweet tooth, sprinkle in a little bit of cocoa powder, or just stir in mini semisweet chocolate chips for a delicious dessert-like oatmeal breakfast with chocolate inside.

STORING AND REHEATING

This air fryer oatmeal recipe can be halved to make just one serving if necessary.  If you have leftovers after making and cooking the oatmeal, let the oatmeal cool to room temperature. Once cooled, cover and store in airtight container and keep refrigerated for 3-4 days

When you are ready to re-heat the oatmeal, add a tablespoon or two of milk or water to prevent it from drying out. Air fry or microwave for 2-3 minutes and then you may need to stir in additional milk or water until it reaches your desired consistency.

FAQS

Can I make oatmeal without milk?

To make this air fryer baked oats recipe, I have used water, or you can substitute a non dairy option like almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.

What type of oats is best for a creamy texture?

Quick-cooking oats or old-fashioned oats tend to result in a creamier texture. I prefer using either of these for this recipe. If using instant oats, cooking time and the amount of liquid used may need to be adjusted.
