Air Fryers are a great way to make traditionally fried food healthier without using a deep fryer. An air fryer uses a heating element and circulating hot air to cook food while a deep fryer uses hot vegetable oil which has extra calories and fats.

What are Latkes

Latkes are traditional potato pancakes that are commonly associated with Jewish cuisine, particularly during Hanukkah, although they are enjoyed year-round as well.

They are made from grated potatoes mixed with ingredients such as eggs, onions, flour or matzo meal, and seasonings. The mixture is then fried until crispy, resulting in a delicious and savory dish.

Latkes are typically served with sour cream or applesauce as toppings.

They hold significant cultural and culinary importance in Jewish tradition, particularly during the Hanukkah holiday, where they symbolize the oil that miraculously lasted for eight days in the story of the Hanukkah miracle.

Crispy potato latkes are made with just a handful of ingredients.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Russet Potatoes
  • Egg
  • All purpose flour
  • Kosher salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • Green onions
  • Olive oil (to spray the tops with before cooking)
  • Sour cream (optional topping)

FAQs

What’s the difference between Latkes and potato pancakes?

Potato pancakes are more uniform and round, while a latke is not as uniform and has little pieces of potato outside of the edges.

Can I use Matzo Meal in place of flour?

Yes! Matzo meal is made from Matzo, a loaf of traditional unleavened bread, and can be used in place of all-purpose flour.
