Ingredients

French vanilla cake mix box with empty silicone liners on a marble table.
  • 15.25 Box Cake Mix: Any flavor works here, which makes this recipe perfect for using what you already have on hand. Vanilla, chocolate, lemon, funfetti, or spice cake all bake up beautifully in the air fryer using the same method. These air fryer cake mix cookies also use a box mix.
  • Box Ingredients: Follow the ingredients listed on your cake mix package. These typically include eggs, vegetable oil, and water.
  • Frosting and Decorations: A tub of store-bought frosting keeps things quick and easy. Finish the cupcakes with sprinkles, chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or any favorite toppings to match the occasion or theme.

Variations

  • Chocolate Chip Cupcakes: Stir ½ cup mini chocolate chips into the prepared batter before baking, like in these air-fried chocolate chip muffins. This variation works best with vanilla, butter, or yellow cake mix, allowing the chocolate chips to stand out without overpowering the cupcake.
  • Nutty Cupcakes: Add ⅓ cup finely chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, to the batter for a bit of crunch and texture. Nutty cupcakes pair especially well with vanilla, butter, or spice cake mixes.
  • Toffee Bit Cupcakes: Mix in ⅓ cup toffee bits for a sweet, caramel-like crunch. This variation is a great match for chocolate, vanilla, or butter cake mixes.
  • Sprinkle Cupcakes: Fold ¼ cup sprinkles into the batter to create a fun, funfetti-style cupcake. For the best color and texture, use jimmies-style sprinkles and pair them with vanilla or white cake mix.
  • Themed Cupcakes: Change up the cake mix flavor, frosting color, and toppings to create holiday or party-themed cupcakes. These are perfect for birthdays, seasonal celebrations, or special events.

Air Fryer Cupcake Time Chart

Air fryer cupcakes bake faster than oven cupcakes, so timing matters more than you might expect. The chart below shows approximate cook times based on cupcake size, using a standard 15.25-ounce cake mix and a basket-style air fryer, with simple adjustments noted for other air fryer styles.

Cupcake SizeTempTimeNotes
Standard cupcakes350°F10–12 minFill liners ¾ full
Mini cupcakes350°F7–9 minStart checking early
Jumbo cupcakes350°F13–15 minLower fill level slightly

Air Fryer Type Adjustments

Air fryers vary by design and airflow, so a few small adjustments can help ensure your cupcakes bake evenly no matter which style you’re using.

  • Basket-Style Air Fryers: Basket-style air fryers, like my Cosori Air Fryer., work best with silicone cupcake liners spaced slightly apart for proper airflow, as unsupported paper liners can tip, fold, or bake unevenly.
  • Oven-Style Air Fryers: Oven-style air fryers can use a standard muffin tin on the middle rack, though cupcakes may need an additional 1–2 minutes of cooking time.
  • Dual-Basket Air Fryers: Dual-basket air fryers typically fit 4–6 cupcakes per basket and often cook faster, so start checking for doneness early and avoid overcrowding.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t Overfill the Liners: Fill cupcake liners no more than ¾ full to prevent batter from splattering or baking unevenly due to the air fryer’s strong airflow.
  • Use Silicone Liners for Basket Air Fryers: Silicone cupcake liners hold their shape and bake more evenly in basket-style air fryers, while unsupported paper liners can tilt or collapse.
  • Space Cupcakes for Proper Airflow: Leave a little space between liners so hot air can circulate evenly around each cupcake for consistent baking.
  • Check Early and Use the Toothpick Test: Start checking cupcakes 1–2 minutes before the recommended time, and use a toothpick inserted into the center to confirm they’re done when it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
  • Second Batches Cook Faster: Once the air fryer is preheated, additional batches may bake more quickly, so reduce the cook time slightly or begin checking earlier.
  • Storing Cupcakes: Store unfrosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate frosted cupcakes to keep the frosting fresh.

Air Fryer Cupcakes Recipe FAQs

Why are my air fryer cupcakes pale on top?

Pale tops are normal for air fryer cupcakes since air fryers cook with circulating hot air rather than radiant heat, and lighter color doesn’t mean the cupcakes are undercooked.

Why are my paper cupcake liners collapsing in the air fryer?

Paper liners can collapse or tilt due to air circulation unless they’re supported, so use silicone cupcake liners or place paper liners inside a muffin pan for stability.

Why do my air fryer cupcakes have dry edges?

Dry edges usually mean the cupcakes were overbaked, which can happen quickly in an air fryer, especially on second batches that cook faster, so start checking a minute or two early.

Why are my air fryer cupcakes raw in the center?

If the centers are undercooked, add 1–2 minutes of cooking time and test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. The cupcakes are done when it comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs

Can you freeze air-fried cupcakes?

Yes, these cupcakes freeze very well, especially when they’re unfrosted.
Let the cupcakes cool completely, then store them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to serve, thaw at room temperature and add frosting just before serving for the best texture and flavor.

Equipment

  • 1 Air Fryer
  • 12 Silicone Cupcake Liners

Ingredients

  • 1 15.25 Box Cake Mix
  • 3 Large eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • To make these cupcakes, prepare the box mix according to directions. For Betty Crocker Cake Mix, use a large mixing bowl, or stand mixer, combine the cake mix with eggs, oil, and water.
  • Beat or whisk cake batter, until the ingredients are well combined. Batter should be smooth and creamy.
  • Lightly spray the inside of the silicone cupcake holders with non-stick spray, then place them in the air fryer basket. If using a basket air fryer, you need to use silicone muffin cups. (If using muffin tins, you can use paper liners.)
  • Pour the cupcake batter in the liners, filling them about 3/4 of the way full. Do not overfill or the fan can splatter the batter.
  • Air fry cupcakes at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes. Allow cupcakes to cool before frosting.

Notes

  • Don’t Overfill: Fill liners no more than ¾ full to prevent splattering and uneven baking.
  • Use Silicone Liners: Silicone cupcake liners work best in basket-style air fryers and help cupcakes hold their shape.
  • Allow Airflow: Space liners slightly apart so hot air can circulate evenly.
  • Check Early: Begin checking 1–2 minutes early and use the toothpick test to confirm doneness.
  • Adjust for Batches: Second batches often cook faster, so reduce the time or check sooner.

I made your boxed cake cupcakes using a devil’s food mix. The texture of the cake was outstanding. One problem. The top of the cupcake looked like the hunchback of Notre Dame. Do you have a solution to this problem? Thank you!

    1. Becky Abbott says:

Hi! Yeah, the air fryer fan can blow the batter around and make it look like a frozen volcano. What I’ve done is use a little less batter and then also try rotating the cupcakes halfway during the air frying. As a last resort, you can just trim the tops a little to make frosting easier.
