Why I Love This Recipe

You honestly don’t need to have a lot on hand to make this recipe. The flavors of the brats are already done for you – so I don’t even use any seasonings.

It’s one of the easiest recipes there is! That’s why this is simply one of my favorites.

This is such a quick and easy recipe, and you really don’t have to prep anything ahead of time to make it.

When you’re adding bell peppers to the bratwurst, you don’t even need to add any additional seasonings. It’s already full of flavor!

You can choose your favorite brand of bratwurst as they all seem to come in the same shape and size.

Ingredients

  • one package of bratwurst
  • 2-3 bell peppers

How to Make Brats in the Air fryer

Step 1
Remove the brats from the refrigerator and allow them to sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2
Slice the bell peppers, (optional: mix with oil and seasonings) and set aside.

Step 3
Prepare the basket of the air fryer with a nonstick spray such as olive oil or use parchment paper for easier clean up.

Step 4
Place the brats in the prepared air fryer basket in a single layer. Place the sliced bell peppers around the sides.

Step 5
Air fry at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes, flipping the brats and bell peppers halfway through, until the brats have reached an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

NOTE: All Air Fryers cook differently and you may need to adjust the time by a minute or two. Make sure you have a thermometer ready to ensure the internal temperature is 160 degrees Fahrenheit before serving.

TIPS

While we don’t use any seasoning on the brats, if you want to add additional flavor to the bell peppers you can mix the sliced peppers in a little olive oil and your favorite seasonings before adding them to the air fryer basket.

Another important note is that you should expect some smoke because of the high-fat content in brats. Make sure that the tray beneath is clean (if you have trays) and start with a clean air fryer (which you really should ALL the time) :-).

Additionally, it’s important to note the Air Fry Bratwurst Cook Time. Cook time can vary from model to model as far as air fryers go, but the general cook time should be between 10-12 minutes.

Cooking at a higher temperature than 360 degrees Fahrenheit could cause the brats to split and cook too fast.

We use the Cosori 5.8 when cooking this recipe and the cooking time is perfect at 10 minutes for a package of 5 brats. Just make sure you keep the brats in a single layer so they cook evenly. We didn’t even have to flip our brats as they browned and cooked perfectly at this time and temperature.

Variations

Soak the brats in stout beer for an hour before cooking. I like to use Guiness.

While you don’t need seasonings for brats, you can use dried herbs for additional flavor.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover brats and peppers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

To freeze, allow the brats to completely cool. Place in a freezer safe airtight container for up to 3 months.

Reheat leftover brats in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes, or until heated through.

FAQs

Should I let the brats rest before eating?

Yes! Just like with any meat that is full of juices, you should allow the meat the rest to allow the juices to completely permeate the entire piece. You can tent them with foil for 5 minutes and then serve.

What’s the best way to serve brats?

We serve brats over a bed of rice with the peppers on the side. When cooking beer brats we usually replace the peppers with onions and serve the brats and onions on a bun. Either way, they are delicious to eat!

Can brats burst in the air fryer?

It’s rare for brats to burst if cooked at the right temperature. Piercing them increases the risk, so it’s best to avoid doing so.

Should I pierce the brats before air frying?

It’s not necessary, and doing so could cause them to lose some of their juices, resulting in less flavorful and drier brats.

I hope you enjoy these brats and peppers as much as we do. If you enjoy this, you might also enjoy these other easy recipes.

You never state the selection of air fry, bake, etc on the air fryer.

I always use the air fry function because not every air fryer has multiple options to use. 🙂 Hope that helps!
