I was craving chocolate and found a Pillsbury Devil’s Food Boxed Cake Mix in the pantry. If you prefer baking cakes from scratch for the homemade cake flavor, you will love other air fryer cake recipes like this Air Fryer Chocolate Bundt Cake or Chocolate Chip Pound Cake recipe.

I use a Cosori 5.8 Quart Oven so a 7-inch cake pan fits perfectly in the basket. You can also use a 6 or 8-inch cake pan, but you will need to adjust the cook time accordingly.

FAQ’s

Can I use any flavor of cake mix?

Yes! I had to have a chocolate cake, so I used a chocolate box mix for this recipe. A yellow cake mix, white cake mix, or your favorite flavor, will work for this recipe.

Do I need a special air fryer cake pan?

For this air fryer cake recipe, you just need a cake pan that will fit in your specific air fryer. If you are making air fryer desserts often, you can purchase an air fryer accessory kit, like this one, based on the type of air fryer basket you have.

How do I store this cake?

Keep the cake in an airtight container, or cover with plastic wrap or foil, and store for up to five days at room temperature. If the cake is frosted, it should be kept stored in the fridge.

Unfrosted cake can be wrapped with plastic wrap and stored in the freezer for up to three months.

  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ingredients needed to prepare the cake mix, according to the box directions. Mix the ingredients together until the cake batter is well combined.
  • To prepare the pan, cut a circle from parchment paper to line the bottom of a cake pan. Then, spray the insides of the pan with a non-stick cooking spray.

  • Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake to check cake for doneness. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cake should be done cooking.
  • Remove the cake from the air fryer and cake pan by flipping over. Let cake cool on a wire rack. Once it's cooled, remove the piece of parchment paper, and place unfrosted cake onto a plate or cake stand.

Notes

I use a Cosori 5.8 Quart Air Fryer so a 7-inch cake pan fits perfectly in the basket. If using a 6 or 8-inch cake pan, you will need to adjust the cook time accordingly.
Because all air fryers are different, cooking time may need to be adjusted by a 2-4 minutes.
The fan does blow the top of the cake mix so it may have a swirl on top. Just trim the top when you remove the cake from the pan for easy frosting.

?? are you using one half of the mixed cake batter, and cooking both layers individually? (7″ pan won’t hold all of the batter)

    1. Rebecca says:

Hi Patty. I was able to fit the entire cake mix in a 7 inch pan. But remember the top will cook before the center so that’s why I cover it with foil after it’s been air frying for a bit. Thanks!

        Hi Rebecca
I m new to air fryer baking. As you mentioned “able to fit the entire cake mix in a 7 inch pan”. Did you bake twice? Just curious what brand of pan, how deep of pan, etc. I assume you use deep pan right?

        1. Becky Abbott says:

I used a traditional cake pan. I baked it once. If the top of the cake cooks before the middle is done, you can cover it with foil and keep air frying until the center is cooked.

  2. Karen Cusimano says:

Hey, I’m new to this air frying stuff (only had it a few weeks, a Master Chef fryer from Amazon), and actually tried to make a cake from a mix per this page, and after following the directions to the letter, took it out, checked with a toothpick, came out clean, flipped it, and found that it was still absolute SOUP in the middle. ???? Any ideas what I need to do differently the next time to get it to come out right? After putting it back in multiple times to continue baking it, it eventually got cooked all the way through but by then the center of it had completely collapsed. Still edible, thankfully, given the price of eggs these days, but the thing was like a small heavy brick. Suggestions? Thanks!

    1. Jen West says:

Oh no! So this recipe is PERFECT in the Cosori air fryer, and I haven’t tested it in the Master Chef as I don’t own that brand. One of the things to take note is that all air fryers cook a little differently so you will probably have to adjust the time and temp slightly for your brand. Also, make sure you’re not using a deep-dish pan, as that could also cause the problem.
