Ingredients:

  • Kale – If you can find kale with large leaves, that’s the best raw kale to use. Full leaves mean that you’ll have crispy pieces of kale that are larger in size.
  • Olive Oil – You can also use avocado oil or coconut oil as well.
  • Sea Salt – Adjust to taste.
  • Ground black pepper – For taste.

How to make Air Fryer Kale Chips

  1. Wash and dry kale leaves. Spread each leaf on a cutting board. Cut the leaves from the spine. Discard the spine and roughly tear the leaves into small pieces.

  2. Transfer the prepared kale chips to a medium sized bowl. Spray the Kale leaves with olive oil, and then toss with salt and pepper. Make sure each leaf is coated with a thin layer of olive oil.

  4. Air fry Kale chips at 350°F (180 C) for about 6 minutes. Shake the basket at 4 minutes. Monitor the kale chips after 4  minutes to ensure they aren’t overcooking.

Variations

Add onion powder – Add this to the top of the kale to kick up the flavor.

Add a drizzle – Drizzle a little bit of soy sauce over the top of this perfect healthy snack. You can also squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top of this crispy snack as well.

Add toppings – Even though there may not be room on all of the kale chips for toppings, you can place kale toppings on some. Sesame seeds and a little bit of garlic powder are a fun pop of flavor. I also think that topping with parmesan cheese is so good!

Top Tip

Use a rack to cover the seasoned kale leaves to keep them from flying around your air fryer. They’re lightweight, and with all the hot air going around on the inside of the air fryer, you’ll want to hold them down so that they get fried evenly and don’t break apart.

How to serve

There’s no wrong way to enjoy these crispy kale chips! Since they’re in bite-sized pieces, you can just pick them up and pop them into your mouth. If you have a dip, dip the air-fried kale chips and then eat. Or do a combination of both and enjoy.

How to store

The best way to enjoy these easy air fryer kale chips is to eat them fresh. This is because they’re warm and crispy right when they get out of the air fryer, making them the perfect time for an afternoon snack.

If you can’t eat them all right away, you can store them for later. I recommend storing them in an airtight container for 2-3 days. You can eat these crispy air fryer kale chips as is or even use them as a topping for salads and more.

FAQs

Why are my kale chips not crispy?

There could be a few reasons that the kale chip recipe isn’t crispy. First off, make sure that you’re rinsing and drying the kale pieces really well. Use a salad spinner to get rid of any excess water, and then put the kale on paper towels to help absorb water, too. If the kale pieces aren’t dry, they’re not going to crisp up.

Secondly, add the kale in a single layer into the air fryer basket. This is super important for all air fryer recipes! If you overcrowd the air fryer basket, it’s going to make this entire air fryer kale chips recipe not crispy at all.

Is it safe to eat kale every day?

While you may not want to make homemade kale chips every day, kale is never a bad thing to add to your diet! They have healthy vitamins and nutrients and can be cooked in so many ways!

Like any food, remember to eat it in moderation and factor in other healthy easy recipes to balance it all out.

You need to be sure that you’re keeping a close eye on the kale chips air fryer recipe. If the thin part of the kale gets cooked for too long, you may get a bitter taste with each bite. Just pay attention to the recipe below, and you should be just fine!
