WHY I LOVE THIS RECIPE
I love making these sandwiches because they are toasted so crispy, and the cheese is melty, right out of the air fryer. I can make them with different cheeses, at the same time, and the air fryer has them done in just a few minutes on each side.
It's pretty simple to make up to four sandwiches at a time, instead of having to make them in a frying pan, one or two at a time. And the crunch is just perfect after air frying.

VARIATIONS
This sandwich is so versatile because you can change the types of cheese. Using Monterey Jack, Sharp Cheddar, to Swiss Cheese, Colby Jack, or even a slice of Pepper Jack Cheese, or any combinations of cheeses, can turn this simple recipe for a classic sandwich, into a gourmet meal.
EXPERT TIPS
- Place sandwiches in a single layer without stacking or overlapping.
- Make this a heartier meal by adding a few slices of bacon to the sandwich, avocado slices, or on inside of slices, spread bread with pesto sauce before adding cheese.
- Depending on the type of bread you use, you may want to adjust the cook times. For softer bread, or French Bread, air fry until it reaches your desired crispness.
- You can use your favorite sandwich spread, like mayo, to make a crispy sandwich. Just replace the butter when layering your pieces of bread.
STORAGE AND REHEATING
Store leftover sandwiches in an airtight container or wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Keep in the refrigerator for up to three days.
These sandwiches are the best when fresh out of the air fryer, but are also crispy when reheated. To reheat, place in the air fryer basket, and air fry at 370 degrees F for 2 minutes on each side.
FAQ's
Shredded cheese can be used to make these sandwiches. Although some cheeses may not melt as well as others. Slices of cheese are easier to use, and help the sandwiches to be the same.
To prevent the bread or slices of cheese from flying around, secure them with a toothpick to help hold the bread in place.

This looks great! I’m planning on making roasted tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches soon. My problem with grilled cheese is the bread usually burns before the cheese melts. This seems like the perfect solution. Two questions for you: 1) Do you set your air fryer to the bake setting rather than air fry setting? 2) Can you make three or four sandwiches in one batch, or is it best just to do two at a time?
Jen West
Hi there! I typically use the air fry setting for everything I do. You can make 4 sandwiches if your air fryer basket allows the room. Some baskets are smaller than others so they can be hard to fit in so many. If your air fryer has the room, you can cook as many as will fit! 🙂

The only way I make my grilled cheese since the 1rst time I made them in my air fryer.

Thank you! So glad you liked it!

When i make grilled cheese the top bread flies off the sandwich. Why
Rebecca
Hi Kim. That can happen if the air circulating catches it just right. You can use a tooth pick to anchor it down.
