Air fryer bread sliced and baked with a golden crust

This bread can be used for so many fun recipes too. Depending on what I want to make, I just cut the slices thick enough and I can make avocado toast, garlic bread, or French toast.

WHY I LOVE THIS RECIPE

I love this air fryer bread recipe because it is so easy. I can make a simple loaf of soft white bread in my air fryer. And, making bread in the air fryer is much faster than baking in the oven too.

There is nothing like having a fresh loaf of bread fresh out of the oven. My kids love when I use fresh bread to make air fryer eggs in a basket, or air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches.

This bread makes the perfect air fryer toast snack that is perfect with just a little butter and jam or honey. Because it’s so fast, I tend to make it more than baking bread in the oven too.

INGREDIENTS

Besides an air fryer, springform pan and mixing bowl, to make this recipe you will need:

Ingredients needed to make bread from scratch
  • instant yeast– instant yeast or active yeast will work. Instant will help the dough rise a little bit faster.
  • warm water-Not HOT water. If water is too hot it won’t activate the yeast.
  • all-purpose flour
  • granulated sugar
  • salt
  • milk
  • egg-whisked with a tablespoon of water for the egg wash to brush on top of the bread to help it turn golden brown.

HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER BREAD

STEP 1
To make this recipe, I first let the yeast bloom. Add yeast like Fleischmann’s, in a medium bowl that has warm water. Let the yeast sit for about 3 to 5 minutes to bloom. When it blooms, you will see it bubble.

STEP 2
Once the yeast has activated, add in the flour sugar milk softened butter and salt. Gently fold the ingredients together until they are well combined and slightly flaky.

STEP 3
Transfer the bread dough onto a well floured surface and knead the dough until it is smooth and then shape it into a ball. You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment or your hands to knead the dough.

STEP 4
Once the dough is in the shape of a ball, place it in a springform pan, lined with parchment paper or lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil.

STEP 5
Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm place until the dough rises to be about double in size.

STEP 6
When the dough has doubled, remove the plastic wrap or towel cover. Lightly brush the top of the bread loaf with an egg wash. Place the pan in the air fryer basket and air fry at 320 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes until the bread is golden brown.

STEP 7
Remove from pan and transfer to cooling rack. Once cooled, cover or store in airtight container.

TIPS

Allow the bread to cool completely before storing to prevent moisture in the bread. This can cause mold or sogginess.

Keep the bread in an airtight container to help preserve it’s freshness.

Store the bread in the refrigerator to help it last longer. You can also wrap it and freeze it for later use.

Using a circle of parchment paper to line the springform pan makes for easy removal. If you aren’t using a pan, be sure to line your basket with air fryer parchment paper.

If you don’t use something to line the basket, the bread dough will sink through the holes in the basket without parchment paper.

VARIATIONS

For whole grain bread, substitute the flour for whole wheat flour.

This dough is great for breadsticks, garlic bread, or these air fryer rolls. The base dough for this recipe is a delicious white bread so you can incorporate a few ingredients to change up the flavors. Add garlic and herbs or shredded cheese for unique twists.

STORING

Seal leftovers or wrap in a dry container. It will taste fresh for 3-4 days. If stored in the fridge, it will last a few days longer. This bread can be frozen for 6-8 months.

FAQ’s

How can I tell if the bread is cooked on the inside?

I tap on the bottom of the bread, and if it sounds like it’s hollow, it should be done on the inside. The bottom of the bread should not feel doughy.

Can I use a regular bread loaf pan for this recipe?

If you use a loaf pan, half the bread dough and make two loaves. Because the air fryer cooks differently than a traditional oven and if it’s too thick, it won’t be able to properly cook the bread.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast, 1 packet
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg, whisked

Instructions

  • Add yeast to a bowl with water that is warm.  Let the yeast sit in the warm water for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Once the yeast has activated, add in the flour, sugar, milk, butter, and salt. Gently fold the ingredients together until they were well combined and it becomes slightly flaky.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead the dough until it is smooth, then shape it into a ball.
  • Place the ball of dough into the air fryer basket, and then wrap with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rest until it doubles in size, about 30 minutes.
  • Brush the top of the loaf with an egg wash. and air fry at 320 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes, until the top of the bread is golden brown.

Notes

Air frying cooking times may vary. Add 1-2 minutes cooking time if necessary, until the top of the bread is golden brown.
I use instant yeast instead of active yeast, because the dough will rise a bit faster, and doesn’t require proving. Keep in mind if you use active yeast, it will take about 15-30 more minutes for the dough to rise, but you can use either.
Allow the bread to cool completely before storing to prevent moisture in the bread. This can cause mold or sogginess.
Using a circle of parchment paper to line the springform pan makes for easy removal. If you aren’t using a pan, be sure to line your basket with air fryer parchment paper. The bread dough will sink through the holes in the basket without parchment paper.

  1. Sanju says:

Can I use 100% whole wheat flour instead of all purpose flour?

    1. Rebecca says:

Hi Sanju. I wouldn’t substitute whole wheat flour for white flour 1:1 because the bread would be very dense. You could try 1/2 wheat and 1/2 all purpose, or another type of flour.

      1. Monique says:

This bread is delicious, however it doesn’t cook through, even after adding a few more minutes. I tried it 3 times. I even turned it around but it still didn’t cook through. Do u have any recommendations?

        1. Becky Abbott says:

Hi Monique- sorry to hear this. I’m wondering how thick you made the bread? Although even if it was turning golden on the outside, I would think you cover the top in foil so it doesn’t burn and then keep air frying until the center cooks. Hope that helps!

      2. Diane Mawdsley says:

Hi can I use gluten flour instead of all purpose? And do I add xanthum gum as well? Many thanks for an ace recipe

  2. Patricia says:

My AirFryer has the racks, it’s like a microwave oven with 2 levels to put the racks in. Would it work in this type of airfryer? I’ve baked tart shells, cupcakes etc. and they turned out fine. I used the Airfryer control but my Airfryer also is a toaster, bakes, convection oven, broils and Airfryer…..I use it a lot, pretty much something every day.
I might give this recipe a try….I do have a spring form pan, now not sure if I should use the top or bottom rack….

    1. Rebecca says:

I find with the rack air fryers, sometimes it can cook them differently because the heating element is up top. I would try and put it in the center of the air fryer so it can get that heat to bake. Cooking time may be a tad longer too. Let me know if you try it!

  3. Jeanette L Thornton says:

What size Air Fryer is this recipe for?

    1. Rebecca says:

Hi Jeanette. I use a Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer.

      1. Rita says:

What can I substitute for milk ?
        Water ?

        1. Rebecca says:

Usually it’s safe to substitute water for milk when making bread, but you may need to add a teaspoon or two of butter to help keep the bread moist. Sometimes using water instead of milk, the bread is dry.

      2. Janie Ann Brydges says:

Can any kind of parchment paper be used as I don’t have air fryer parchment paper?

        1. Rebecca says:

Yes! You can just cut a square of parchment paper that will fit in your basket, and then poke holes in it for circulation.

  4. Amy says:

Have you tried this recipe with GF flour?

    1. Rebecca says:

I have not tried it with Gluten Free flour.

  5. Linda says:

Just to be sure, it is all purpose flour and not bread flour? It looks great!

  6. Silvana says:

    5 stars
Hi, I just made it and 2 cups of all Purpose gluten free flower was not enough, was super pasty and I had to add more, It’s because os gluten free?? Smells awesome and I put sun flower seeds on the top.
    Thanks

  7. Fliss says:

So easy! I did find this quite sweet? Is adding the granulated sugar essential?

    1. Jen West says:

You can decrease the amount of sugar at your preference. 🙂

  8. Gerard says:

When placing the dough ball into the air fryer to rise, how warm should the air fryer be?

    1. Rebecca says:

I don’t place it in the air fryer to rise. I usually place it in the warmest spot in my kitchen, so it stays warm, but not too hot.

  9. Marilyn says:

Is it necessary to use a springform pan or can you put the dough ball right into the air fryer basket?

    1. Rebecca says:

I think it would be fine to put it in the air fryer basket, if you have air fryer parchment paper or a small baking sheet, otherwise the dough could sink through the holes in the basket.

      1. Chris says:

The recipe says to put it in the air fryer basket?

        1. Rebecca says:

Hi Chris. I put the dough in a spring form pan, or a cake pan first. Otherwise it will go through the holes in the basket.

  10. Denise says:

Air fryers are different, still doughy on the bottom after 14 minutes. Top looked great! It had good flavor. Will try again.

    1. Rebecca says:

Hi Denise. Yes, air fryers are different. If you still have a slightly doughy bottom, you could flip the loaf over and add a few extra minutes cook time. Thank you! Glad you liked it! There is nothing better than a kitchen smelling like freshly baked bread!
