- dried minced onion
- kosher salt or flaky sea salt
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE EVERYTHING BAGEL SEASONING
STEP 1
In a small bowl, combine the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and salt.
STEP 2
Use a spoon or small whisk to stir well to evenly distribute all of the ingredients.
STEP 3
Transfer the mixture to a small jar that can be sealed with a lid.
TIPS
Sometimes dried onion flakes and dried garlic flakes can be too big, so I chop them up to make them closer to the size of the sesame seeds. It's a personal preference, but I find you get the perfect combination of flavors when they are closer in size.
VARIATIONS
Spicy Seasoning: For extra spicy seasoning, add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes, chili powder, or if you want it really spicy, cayenne pepper.
Nutty Seasoning: Add a tablespoon or two of finely chopped nuts like almonds or pecans, or salted sunflower seeds for an extra crunchy and nutty flavor. I love sunflower seeds with mine!
USES
I use this seasoning on probably too many things, because it's so delicious, I can't stop myself! Here are just of a few of my favorite ways to use this seasoning:
Bagels and Toast: I like to sprinkle the seasoning on top of the bagels or over the cream cheese after I've toasted the bagel. It's also yummy on top of toast like avocado toast or just plain toast.
Veggies: I love adding this to season my roasted vegetables. It's delicious on everything from carrots and broccoli to brussels sprouts!
Salad: Sprinkling a little bit of this on top of a salad can add so much flavor and a little extra crunch.
Dips: Mix a few tablespoons with sour cream for a yummy dip that is delicious with chips or raw veggies.
Eggs, Chicken, Steak, Seafood: The seasoning is perfect on top of air fryer scrambled eggs, or in an egg sandwich, but I also sprinkle it on top of chicken, steak, or fish dinners as a seasoning before I cook the meat.
Popcorn: Elevate movie night by sprinkling a small amount over this air fryer popcorn for an extra flavor everyone will love!
STORING
Store your homemade bagel spice blend in a sealed jar that is dry and airtight. Keep it in a cool dry place, like a pantry.
When you make your own DIY seasonings, it's important that you label the jar with the date you make the mixture so you can track freshness.
If properly stored, this seasoning should be good for up to 12 months, but it's usually best to use within six months.
FRQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It should be. The nice thing about making your own mixture, is that you can control what you put into the mix. So check your ingredients if you have an allergy.
This seasoning is more salty, but if you want to add a tablespoon of brown sugar to the mix, you can easily switch it to sweets. Or sprinkle it as it is on top of muffins or pancakes for a little crunch. It's up to your taste preference.
Of course! You can swap out the sesame seeds and use sunflower seeds or find something else to add in if you just don't want them in your seasoning. Although, if you don't have poppy seeds, flax seeds or caraway seeds are great substitutions.
While the powders will give you flavor, they won't give the same crunch as the dried versions. Because of this, I don't recommend it.
