These delicious treats are perfect for snacking or for when I need a quick dessert in a pinch. And they are almost as good as a homemade warm apple pie.

WHY I LOVE MAKING THIS RECIPE

I love making these apple rings, also called apple donuts, because they are so fun to make and I only need a handful of ingredients. When I’m craving apples and cinnamon, but don’t want the hassle of making a whole apple pie, I can just slice up an apple or two and have this sweet treat ready in no time.

The air fryer can make so many desserts even easier! These apple rings are just another example of why we love our air fryer so much! The warm golden brown puff pastry crust is so yummy over the apple slice!

And of course, finishing the treat off dipped in melted butter and cinnamon sugar, is just perfection! These puff pastry apple rings make a great snack or dessert. I love topping it with a scoop of ice cream or drizzling caramel sauce on top too!

If you love apples as much as I do, you have to try these air fryer apple chips, air fryer apple fritters, or these air fryer apple turnovers

INGREDIENTS

Apples, puff pastry, and other ingredients needed to make apple rings on a marble table.
  • puff pastry sheets
  • large apples– such as Red, gala apples, or Granny Smith apples
  • lemon juice-brushing with lemon juice will help prevent the apples from turning brown after you slice them.
  • egg white-this is for the egg wash. It will not only help the apple rings turn golden brown, but it also helps the cinnamon sugar mixture stick to the slices.
  • water
  • granulated sugar
  • ground cinnamon

Optional: Sprinkle spices like pumpkin pie spice with the cinnamon sugar mixture for extra flavor.

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1
Let pastry sheets thaw. Then unfold them onto a cutting board, or very lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough, sealing the seams.

STEP 2
Use a pizza cutter or paring knife to cut the pastry sheets into strips, about ½ inch in width.

STEP 3
Peel and core the apple, then cut them into slices ¼ inch to ½ inch in thickness. Use a paring knife or small round cookie cutter to make the hole in the center of the apple into a larger circle, about 1 inch in diameter.

Peeled and cored apples, cut into slices like rings, with the center being removed making a hole.

STEP 4
Brush the slices with lemon juice to prevent the apples from browning while you wrap them with the strips of dough.

STEP 5
Wrap each apple slice with 2-3 slices of puff pastry strips, looping through the center.

STEP 6
Whisk the egg white, and the tablespoon of water together. Then brush the egg wash onto the tops and bottoms of each wrapped slice.

STEP 7
In a small shallow bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar. Then, dip each wrapped slice into the cinnamon sugar mixture. Use a spoon to scoop the mixture so you coat both sides.

STEP 7
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray, or line it with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Place each coated apple slice into the air fryer in a single layer.

STEP 8
Air fry at 380 degrees F for 6-8 minutes, until the puff pastry is light golden brown. Turn the rings over and air fry on the opposite side for additional 2-4 minutes if necessary.

TIPS FOR MAKING AIR FRYER APPLE RING

Be sure to slice the apples thick enough to wrap the pastry slices around the rings. An apple corer makes it easy to remove the center before slicing, but if you don’t have one, just use a sharp paring knife.

I like to use tart apples, but sweet apples are good too! Or do one or two of each for a variety.

A pizza cutter cuts the strips really fast and can make them even.

Place the rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket without stacking or overlapping. This will help the pastry cook evenly.

Use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar and cinnamon, then air fry them for an extra minute or two so the brown sugar crystallizes a bit.

If you cut the strips into half inch slices, you should only use 2-3  strips per apple ring.

VARIATIONS

Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or yogurt for a delicious dessert.

Wrap with strips of pie crust instead of puff pastry if you can’t find puff pastry dough. You still still get buttery layers of crust and the apple pie flavor!

Roll out a can of cinnamon roll dough and then cut that into strips to wrap around the apple rings. This is a perfect alternative for puff pastry.

STORING

Store leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator. You can serve them cool, but if you want to reheat them, return them to the air fryer or microwave until they are warmed through.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I substitute the puff pastry?

Wrap with strips of pie crust instead of puff pastry if you can’t find puff pastry dough.

Do I have to do an egg wash?

Brush the apple rings with milk instead of egg wash! That works too! An egg or milk wash helps them turn golden brown and helps the cinnamon sugar coating stick.

Does it matter what type of apple I use?

Not at all! Use whatever type of apples that you use for apple pie. My favorite apples are granny smith, but it’s a personal preference.
