Another yummy sandwich is this caprese grilled cheese. It's full of flavor!
Ingredients:
- sourdough bread
- 4 slices of tomato (Red beefsteak tomatoes are my favorite)
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1 Tablespoon salted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar (½ for each sandwich)
How to Make Grilled Tomato and Cheese Sandwiches in the Air Fryer
- Spread a light coat of butter onto both sides of each slice of bread.
- Assemble each sandwich by adding slices of tomato, shredded Gruyere cheese, and then brushing the tomatoes with the balsamic vinegar.
- Place prepared sandwiches in a single layer into the basket of the air fryer.
- Air fry the tomato and cheese sandwiches at 370 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Remove from the air fryer when they've reached your preferred level of golden, crispy brown.
NOTE: This recipe was made in the 1700 watt 5.8 quart basket style Cosori air fryer. If you are using a different size or different brand of air fryer, you may need to adjust the cooking time slightly. All air fryers will cook a little differently.
OPTIONAL: Consider using different cheeses such as American, Provolone, or Swiss cheese to change the flavors.
FAQs
Can I use a different cheese other than Gruyere?
YES! I love to use different cheeses with this recipe. You can also use American cheese, mozzarella cheese, or a Mexican blend for more flavor.
Can I store leftover grilled tomato and cheese?
I wouldn't recommend storing the sandwiches as the tomato will eventually make the bread soggy. These are definitely made to be eaten immediately after cooking.
How do I keep the bread from flying in my air fryer?
The sourdough bread is a bit heavier than normal light white bread, so we didn't have any issues with the bread flying around in the air fryer. However, if you have issues with your bread, secure it in place with a couple of toothpicks.
Can I add more to this sandwich to make it more filling?
If you want to make this sandwich more filling, consider adding in sliced turkey, roast beef, or ham.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do! It's a fun sandwich that's not only light, but full of flavor.
