The other positive is that there are a lot of different ways that you can make this simple side dish. The easiest way is to follow the recipe card below, so many sure that you scroll down to see all the simple ingredients and their full measurements.

My personal preference is to pair this with some yummy air fryer sausage, but you do what you want to do! (and then come back and tell me about the delicious combination that you made)

Ingredients:

  • Green bell peppers – You will be taking the seeds out and slicing them. You can also use red bell peppers, green peppers, or yellow peppers for this pepper recipe.
  • Red onion – Be sure to peel and slice it.
  • White onion – Peeled and cut lengthwise.
  • Extra virgin olive oil – This helps add flavor and also adds a nice nonstick coating so that the ingredients don’t stick to the air fryer basket.
  • Sea salt – To taste.
  • Ground black pepper – To taste.
  • Garlic powder – A great way to add flavor without it being overpowering.
  • Red pepper flakes – The best way to add some heat.

Variations

Add meat – You can easily chop up and add air fryer brats, hot Italian sausages, polish sausage, or any sausage that you’d like. (cook it first and then add it to the rest of the recipe)

Add sweet potatoes – This would be the perfect way to take this simple recipe and add a big flavor.

Use avocado oil – Instead of extra virgin olive oil, you can easily use avocado oil or even coconut oil as well.

Top Tip

My little secret? You really can’t go wrong cooking these veggies because even if they have a nice char on them, they’re still delicious!

Don’t stress – and have fun making them. They’re forgiving and are so SIMPLE to do!

How to Serve

This peppers recipe is a great addition to any meal. While you can make this on the stovetop, air frying is so much better! It is a healthy side dish that can be seasoned with different spices (like Italian seasoning!)

How to Store

Once this flavorful side is cooked, all you have to do is let it cool down and then add it to an airtight container. It does need to be stored in the fridge and kept cold. When you want to eat, reheat it in the microwave for a fast and tasty meal.

For the best results, eat within two days of cooking.

FAQs

What is the best way to slice peppers and onions?

You want to slice them both to be about the same size. The reasoning is that they’ll cook evenly and at the same pace. The last thing that you want to have to happen is to prep and slice the veggies and have them cook at a different rate.

While you might not mind crunchy peppers or onions, they’re supposed to be softer and not as crunchy.

What toppings can you add to the air fryer bell peppers and onions?

You have great options when it comes to toppings! Drizzling with a little bit of balsamic vinegar is never a bad idea. You can also add a pinch of salt, onion powder, chili pepper flakes, and more.

Toppings aren’t a requirement, but they’re a great way to make the sweet peppers and onions taste different every time.

Can you freeze cooked peppers and onions?

You can. If you want to put them in the freezer, just let them cool down all the way and then add them to a freezer-safe bag. This way, when you’re ready to eat them, you don’t have to stress about prepping – just thawing!

To thaw the mixture, move it to your fridge. Easy peasy.
