There’s something about a warm chocolate chip cookie with a soft, gooey center and edges that just barely crisp. These Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies come together in the air fryer at 300°F in about 7–8 minutes per batch with no waiting on the oven or heating up the whole kitchen.

You go from craving to cookie almost before you’ve decided you wanted one. Buttery, melty, and best eaten warm with a cold glass of milk. If you love air fryer cookies, try these air fryer snickerdoodles next!

I love how easy it is to get a real batch of chocolate chip cookies out of the air fryer! Golden and just-crisp at the edges, soft and gooey in the middle, with melty chocolate in every bite. Even better, there’s no waiting on the oven to preheat and no heating up the whole kitchen on a warm afternoon.

This dough makes about three dozen, so there’s plenty to share, stash, or set out for after dinner. And if you don’t want to bake them all at once, the dough freezes beautifully.

Ingredients

Ingredients on a marble table measured out for chocolate chip cookies.
  • Unsalted butter: Softened to room temperature so it creams smoothly with the sugars and gives the dough its rich, buttery base. Softened (not melted) also keeps the cookies from spreading too thin in the air fryer’s fast-moving heat.
  • Granulated and brown sugar: I use both in this recipe. Granulated sugar crisps the edges, while brown sugar brings moisture and a little caramel depth that keeps the centers soft and chewy.
  • Large eggs: Bind the dough together and add moisture, giving the cookies structure so they hold their shape as they bake.
  • Milk chocolate chips: Melt into gooey pockets throughout the cookie. Swap in semi-sweet or dark chips for less sweetness.

See the recipe card for the full list of ingredients with measurements.

Variations

  • Change up the chips. For a totally different flavor, swap the milk chocolate for white chocolate chips instead, just like in these white chocolate chip cookies with peppermint. Use chocolate chunks for bigger pockets of melted chocolate and M&Ms or peanut butter chips are always a hit with the kids.
  • Add some crunch. Fold in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans along with the chocolate.
  • Finish with flaky salt. A little sprinkle over the tops right before they go in plays up the sweetness and makes them taste a little more bakery-style.
  • Use store-bought dough. No time to make dough from scratch? A refrigerated tube or pre-portioned dough works too. Bake times run about the same, but air fryers vary, so test one cookie first before you fill the basket.
  • Change the size. For larger cookies, add 1–2 minutes; for smaller ones, check them a minute early.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Cookies in the Air Fryer

The cookie dough comes together quickly, in just a few steps. You’ll bake them in batches: depending on the size of your air fryer, you can fit anywhere from 6 to 9 cookies in a single layer.

I recommend using parchment paper to line the air fryer basket. If you don’t have pre-made parchment paper, you can use regular parchment paper and cut holes in it.

Butter and both types of sugar in a mixing bowl.
  1. Combine the butter, sugar, and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl.

  1. Beat the butter with sugars until smooth and creamy using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer. Add the eggs, vanilla, salt, baking soda, and flour. Beat on medium speed until the cookie dough is thick and creamy.

  1. Mix the cookie dough until the chips are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

  1. Use a small portion scoop or a spoon to shape the dough into 1- 1 1/2 inch balls. Place the dough into the air fryer basket on top of the parchment paper. Leave about an inch in between each cookie. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you can fit 6-9 cookies, so you will need to cook in batches.
Cookies in the air fryer basket after being cooked
  1. Air fry the cookies at 300° F for 7-8 minutes. When ready, let them sit in the air fryer basket for an additional 1 to 2 minutes. Then gently lift the parchment paper out of the basket, and let them cool on the counter or on a wire rack for a couple of minutes longer. The cookies will look slightly underdone after cooking but they will firm up as they cool.

Love gooey or crispy cookies? For softer cookies, lower the cook time by 1-2 minutes. For crispy cookies, add one more minute to cooking time.

Expert Tips & Troubleshooting

  • A quick safety note on parchment. Never run the air fryer with parchment sitting in it by itself. The fan can lift loose paper into the heating element, and that’s a fire hazard. Placing the dough on top keeps it safely in place.
  • Test one cookie first. Any time you’re using a new air fryer or making this recipe for the first time, bake a single cookie before you fill the basket. Air fryers vary more than ovens do, and one test cookie tells you exactly how yours runs so you’re not guessing with a whole batch.
  • Don’t judge by color alone. The tops brown faster in an air fryer than they do in the oven, so a cookie can look done before the center actually is. Go by the edges being set and golden, and trust that the middle finishes as it cools.
  • Too flat? The dough was likely too warm or the butter was melted rather than softened. To fix, chill the scooped dough for 10–15 minutes before baking.
  • Not spreading at all? This is usually caused by too much flour. Be sure to spoon it into the measuring cup and level it off rather than scooping straight from the bag, which packs in more than you need.

Storing & Make Ahead

  • Storing: Store baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3–5 days, or you can freeze them for up to 3 months.
  • Freeze the dough: Shape the dough into balls and freeze on a parchment-lined baking tray. Once frozen, transfer to a storage container and keep frozen for up to 3 months. Bake fresh cookies straight from frozen when a craving hits. Just add 1-2 minutes to the cooking time.
  • Warm cookies: To bring day-old cookies back to life, warm them in the air fryer at 300°F for 1–2 minutes.

Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe FAQs

What temperature do you cook chocolate chip cookies in an air fryer?

I air fry chocolate chip cookies at 300°F for 7–8 minutes, or use the bake setting at 320°F for 5–6 minutes if my air fryer has one. A lower temperature is the trick with cookies because it gives the centers time to cook through before the tops get too dark.

Can I bake cookies in the oven instead of air frying?

Yes. Prep the dough the same way, then bake on a lined sheet at 350°F for 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are set and golden. The recipe works either way, so it’s an easy swap if your oven’s already on.

Can you air fry frozen chocolate chip cookie dough?

Absolutely! It’s the whole reason I like to keep dough balls in the freezer. Air fry them straight from frozen and just add about 2 minutes to the time. Keep an eye on the first batch to see how your air fryer handles them.

Why are the tops of my air-fried chocoalte chip cookies dark but the centers still raw?

This usually comes down to airflow and timing rather than temperature, since 300°F is already on the gentle side. Make sure the cookies are in a single layer with space between them so the heat can circulate, and don’t overcrowd the basket. It also helps to pull them when the centers still look slightly underdone. They keep cooking as they rest, and crowding is the most common reason the tops race ahead of the middles.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Beat the butter with sugars until smooth and creamy.
  • Add eggs, vanilla, salt, baking soda, and half of the flour. Mix until the dry ingredients have combined with the butter mixture.
  • Add in the remaining half of the flour and mix on medium speed, until the cookie dough is thick and creamy. Once the dough is mixed, stir in the chocolate chips, and optional nuts, until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Use a small cookie scoop or spoon to shape the dough into balls. Place the dough balls into the air fryer basket on top of parchment paper. Leave about an inch in between each cookie.
  • Air Fry at 300 degrees F for 7-8 minutes. When cookies are golden brown, let them sit in the air fryer basket for an additional 1 to 2 minutes before transferring to cooling rack.

Notes

  • Parchment safety: Never run the air fryer with parchment in it alone — the fan can blow it into the heating element. Always weigh it down with dough. If you don’t have air fryer parchment paper you can make your own by poking holes in regular parchment.
  • Test one cookie first. With a new air fryer or your first time making these, bake a single cookie to see how your machine runs before filling the basket.
  • Don’t judge by color alone. Tops brown faster than in the oven, so go by set, golden edges — the centers finish as they cool.
